Legal proceedings regarding the death of PASOK official Sifis Valyrakis have centered on allegations of a systemic cover-up. During the trial, legal advisor Manolis Fotakis presented evidence and eyewitness testimony suggesting involvement by port authorities and a ‘shadow state’. Following a court decision that acquitted two fishermen, legal counsel Zoe Konstantopoulou alleged the activation of a ‘parastate cover-up mechanism’ designed to distort evidence and alter testimonies. Konstantopoulou highlighted a split in the Mixed Jury Court, noting that the presiding judge’s minority opinion and the prosecutor’s request for conviction differed from the final ruling. She further alleged political interference, claiming the widow was pressured by the Minister of Justice to avoid appealing the initial archiving of the case. While PASOK spokesperson Dimitris Mantzos rejected these accusations, the family’s legal team has announced an appeal to the Athens Court of First Instance. In response to the ongoing dispute, Zoi Konstantopoulou, acting as lawyer for the Valyrakis family and leader of Plevsi Eleftherias, has announced an immediate appeal to the Athens Prosecutor of First Instance. She has also accused PASOK of complicity in a ‘deep state’ due to its silence regarding alleged pressures on the widow. PASOK has dismissed these claims as ‘politically dangerous’. The Association of Greek Prosecutors has issued a statement condemning unsubstantiated personal accusations of cover-ups against prosecutors. The Association emphasized that while judicial decisions may be criticized, personal attacks lacking evidence undermine the credibility and independence of the justice system.
