Sigtunaskolan boarding school criminal investigation and abuse allegations
Police in Sigtuna, Sweden, have launched an investigation into suspected sexual assault and coercion involving students at the Sigtunaskolan Humanistiska Läroverket (SSHL) boarding school. Three 18-year-old male students have been detained in connection with serious crimes against younger students occurring between August and October. Two of the males are held on suspicion of aggravated sexual harassment, aggravated unlawful coercion, unlawful threats, and aggravated assault. A third student was detained for assault and unlawful coercion following a successful appeal by prosecutor Lisa dos Santos to prevent the potential destruction of evidence. All suspects deny the allegations. Authorities and experts are examining whether the incidents are linked to ‘kamratuppfostran’, a tradition of peer-led discipline and initiation rituals within the dormitories. Researcher Petter Sandgren noted that older students often maintain power structures that require younger students to perform specific rituals. Prosecutor Lisa dos Santos stated that several of these disciplinary actions have constituted criminal acts. The school, which hosts approximately 600 students including 220 boarders, is currently managing a tense atmosphere as students and staff process the developments. atmosphere. School CEO Sofia Kinberg affirmed that tradition cannot excuse abusive behavior and stated the school supports those who come forward. The Swedish Schools Inspectorate (Skolinspektionen) is now considering a new investigation into the institution following approximately 22 reports. These reports include allegations of serious abuse involving three students and claims of a ‘culture of fear and repressive punishment systems’. Some complainants have reportedly submitted reports anonymously due to fear of reprisals.
