The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) began preparations for the inaugural Silchar Municipal Corporation election, scheduled for October 3. Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia announced that the party would finalize candidates for the 42 wards in early September, with a campaign focus on urban development, digital municipal services, and addressing drainage and flooding issues. Following these preparations, the Silchar district Congress party requested an investigation by the State Election Commission into the educational qualification certificates of 13 BJP candidates. The Congress also criticized the BJP-led municipal board for significant increases in civic taxes and trade license fees. As the election approaches, the BJP has unveiled an 11-point development roadmap titled ‘Unnata Silchar, Samriddha Assam’. According to Dilip Saikia, the plan seeks to transform Silchar into a planned, secure, and green city by addressing waterlogging, drinking water shortages, road networks, and traffic congestion, while also providing coaching for youth and support for women and senior citizens. Internal friction has also emerged within the party. The state BJP expelled 12 members who filed nominations as independent candidates against official nominees and suspended four others for anti-party activities. Amidst this, rebel candidate Sanghita Chakrabarty has alleged that certain nominees do not meet the mandatory educational qualifications required by the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, a claim Saikia has denied.
