Konami has released Silent Hill: Townfall for PlayStation 5, Steam, Epic Games, and Xbox Series X. Developed by Screen Burn Interactive in collaboration with Annapurna Interactive, the title marks the first full-length entry in the franchise to adopt a first-person perspective to enhance immersion. Set in 1996 on the remote Scottish island of St. Amelia, players control Simon Ordell, an American man with memory loss. The narrative is told through three different viewpoints, including Ordell and a nurse named Zoe Ellis. Gameplay utilizes a portable television known as the ‘CRTV’ to detect threats and solve puzzles within a fog-shrouded environment. The game offers a linear experience with a playtime of approximately 12 to 15 hours, featuring a story mode, a hint mode, and a New Game Plus mode with five distinct endings. The three primary endings—Justice, Forever, and Abandoned—are determined by player behavior, such as the ratio of enemies killed to items discovered, while secret ‘Dog’ and ‘Sci-fi’ endings require a New Game Plus playthrough. Critical reception has been generally positive, with Metacritic scores averaging between 81 and 82. Reviewers have lauded the atmospheric tension, art direction, and sound design, noting the use of Unreal Engine 5’s Lumen technology for advanced lighting. While the PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro versions are visually polished, the PC version has faced performance struggles. Following reports of these issues, developer Screen Burn released patch 1.3.1 to target shader compilation and stuttering. In a subsequent significant update (version 1.4), the developer introduced adjustments to difficulty and mechanics to reduce player frustration. Key changes include modifying the enemy ‘The Weight’ so its grab attacks no longer result in instant death on Story and Normal settings, and refining its artificial intelligence. Combat adjustments also include reduced enemy sensitivity to sound and fewer counter-attacks during melee. Additionally, the patch provides assistance for ‘Remote Systems Control’ and ‘Aux Line’ puzzles through collectible manuals or revised layouts, while fixing a progression blocker in Part 5 and improving hardware compatibility.
