Silicon Valley security guard labor dispute

Overview

Labor tensions have escalated between security contractors and workers representing guards at several major Silicon Valley technology firms, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Salesforce.

In late August, Anthropic instructed San Francisco office staff to work from home following a warning from its security contractor, Allied Universal, regarding a potential walkout. At that time, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) stated it had not yet authorized a strike, though negotiations regarding wages, healthcare, and training had been ongoing since April.

By early September, the SEIU-United Service Workers West union announced that members successfully voted to authorize a strike following a deadlock in contract negotiations. The union is seeking to increase the minimum hourly rate from $22 to $30. Union leader David Huerta characterized a previous offer from Allied Universal as “shameful” and “disrespectful to workers.” While the strike authorization has been granted, a formal date for industrial action has not been set.
