Law enforcement activities targeting high-ranking members of the Sinaloa Cartel have intensified. On September 23, 2026, José Ángel Rivera Zazueta, known as ‘Don Flaco,’ was arrested in Mexico City during a coordinated operation involving Mexican authorities and U.S. agencies including the FBI and DEA. Rivera Zazueta, a sanctioned financial operator, allegedly managed the import of chemical precursors from China for the production of fentanyl and methamphetamine. His arrest was conducted to fulfill a provisional detention order for extradition to the United States. Following this, on September 25, 2026, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration reissued a search notice for Ismael Zambada Sicairos, known as ‘El Mayito Flaco.’ As a leader of the ‘La Mayiza’ faction, Zambada Sicairos is wanted in San Diego for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, specifically cocaine and fentanyl. Authorities have offered rewards of up to $15 million for information leading to his capture. The DEA has issued a warning that Zambada Sicairos, the son of co-founder Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, is considered ‘armed and dangerous.’ His last known location is reported to be in Mexico. His rise to leadership follows his father’s arrest in July 2024 and has reportedly intensified internal conflicts between the ‘La Mayiza’ and ‘Los Chapitos’ factions within the Sinaloa Cartel.
