Singapore forest conservation and climate adaptation debate

Singapore is experiencing growing tension between urban development needs and climate adaptation strategies. As the government prepares its first national climate adaptation plan, involving significant investment in seawalls and drainage systems, it faces public backlash over the clearing of secondary forests to address housing shortages.

Protests and criticism from environmental activists and residents have centered on planned developments in areas such as Maju Forest and Gillman Barracks. Critics argue that current environmental impact assessments do not sufficiently account for the role natural forests play in mitigating heat and flood risks. While National Development Minister Alvin Tan stated that revised plans would preserve more forest than initially proposed, concerns persist regarding whether managed greenery can replace the ecological functions of natural secondary forests.

In the context of long-term planning, former Urban Redevelopment Authority director Larry Ng has emphasized the necessity of proactive urban design to combat rising sea levels and temperatures, noting that infrastructure must anticipate long-term climate risks rather than reacting to them after impacts occur.
