In early July 2026 the Singapore government announced public‑housing plans for part of the Maju Forest area. By early August officials detailed that the scheme would also involve the adjacent Gillman Barracks site, aiming to retain eight hectares of secondary forest, a natural stream and historic railway infrastructure while providing new homes. On 4 August Minister of State for National Development Alvin Tan told Parliament the proposals are still under review and not finalised. The current concept would clear roughly 10 ha of forest at Gillman Barracks and about 15 ha of Maju Forest, preserving the eight‑hectare secondary forest corridor, the stream and the old Jurong railway line. Public consultation on the Environmental and Heritage Impact Assessments runs until 6 August, after which further stakeholder engagement is planned. A petition signed by around 40,000 residents continues to call for full protection of the forest and heritage sites. Conservation groups have highlighted that the Maju Forest hosts the critically endangered Sunda pangolin, raising additional biodiversity concerns. The government maintains that new housing is essential to meet long‑term demand amid a declining birth rate, noting that other vacant sites are earmarked for different uses.
