Water services in the Borgata and Ortigia districts of Siracusa were disrupted following a double failure in the supply pipeline. Local utility provider Aretusacque initially reported that technicians were working to repair the damage to restore flow. It was later clarified that a series of electrical blackouts caused the infrastructure damage, leading to multiple ruptures in the supply lines feeding the Teracati reservoir. These failures resulted in intermittent supply and reduced water pressure for residents. By October 19, 2026, Aretusacque reported that repairs to the supply lines were complete and the reservoir was refilling. Additionally, the utility announced a planned €155,000 investment to modernize the water network in the via Ispica and Ronchi areas by replacing obsolete piping. This modernization project, scheduled to begin in December, involves replacing obsolete pipes with 675 meters of new high-density polyethylene tubing to benefit approximately 450 residents. On October 21, 2026, new disruptions emerged after severe weather caused overnight electricity outages. The loss of power forced the temporary shutdown of several lifting and pumping plants, causing a significant drop in reservoir levels. When power was restored, sudden pressure fluctuations caused multiple pipe bursts. Aretusacque reported that residents in Ortigia, Bufalaro, Borgata, and surrounding districts might experience continued pressure reductions or service interruptions as teams work to locate faults and rebalance reservoir levels. By October 24, 2026, the situation escalated into a crisis characterized by prolonged service interruptions and low pressure. Local councilor Paolo Cavallaro criticized the management of the utility, stating the situation has “exceeded all reasonable limits of tolerability.” Cavallaro reported significant communication difficulties, noting that citizens face telephone wait times of nearly one hour with Aretusacque.
