SK Hynix is undergoing a strategic shift in its semiconductor manufacturing footprint, focusing on domestic expansion in South Korea and new facilities in the United States while reassessing its operations in China. In early August 2026, the company's board approved approximately 54.3 trillion won ($38.3 billion) in investments through 2031 to construct two new fabrication plants in South Korea: a DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) facility in Yongin and a NAND flash memory plant in Cheongju. To support its AI-driven technology goals, the company has announced an ambitious $720 billion global investment plan to build an extensive network of memory production plants. Expanding its presence in the United States, SK Hynix is scheduled to break ground on an advanced semiconductor packaging facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, on August 27, 2026. This $3.87 billion project, which includes R&D facilities, is expected to receive up to $450 million in direct subsidies and $500 million in loans under the U.S. CHIPS Act. Mass production of HBM at the Indiana site is projected to begin in the second half of 2028. Concurrently, the company is evaluating options for its semiconductor packaging and testing plant in Chongqing, China. The facility, a major hub for NAND flash memory back-end production, has an estimated enterprise value of approximately $3 billion. SK Hynix is considering attracting external investors or selling a stake to local semiconductor companies or Chinese investment funds. An official stated, “We are reviewing various options for the Chongqing plant to strengthen its competitiveness, but nothing has been decided yet.”
