SK hynix has moved from suspending to officially abandoning its planned U.S. initial public offering (IPO) for its NAND flash business subsidiary, Solidigm. While the company previously cited market volatility and semiconductor price corrections as reasons for a pause, the cancellation of the IPO has significant implications for the global NAND flash market. According to a research report by LYNX Equity Strategies, the cancellation removes a potential source of long-term supply expansion. Had the IPO proceeded, the capital was intended to fund manufacturing capacity in the U.S., possibly at Intel’s Ohio campus, which would have provided strategic advantages regarding trade restrictions compared to Solidigm’s existing wafer fab in China. Analysts suggest this move may benefit competitors such as Micron Technology and SanDisk by eliminating a trigger for future supply pressure. Following the IPO withdrawal, questions have emerged regarding how Solidigm will secure the significant funding—potentially up to $10 billion—required to build new NAND production facilities to meet AI-driven enterprise SSD demand. Potential financing scenarios now include issuing corporate bonds, obtaining bank loans, or capital increases by SK hynix. Solidigm is reportedly considering Upstate New York as a candidate site for a new fab, with local officials currently in negotiations. Amidst broader market uncertainty and stock selloffs, SK hynix is also addressing rumors of a 16 trillion won special dividend. The company stated it is reviewing various shareholder return measures to enhance value, but no specific plan has been finalized. An official position is expected to be announced alongside the third-quarter earnings report on the 28th. Recent reports suggest a potential $12 billion special dividend could be funded by gains from the company’s Kioxia stake sale.
