SKC investment in Absolics glass substrate business
Overview
SKC is progressively increasing its ownership in Absolics, a semiconductor glass substrate subsidiary, to strengthen its position in the AI semiconductor packaging market.
Initially, SKC announced plans to raise its stake in Absolics to 70% through an acquisition of shares valued at 281 billion won. This subsidiary, a joint venture with Applied Materials, is working to commercialize next-generation glass substrates, with products undergoing reliability testing and customer technical verification. To support these efforts, Absolics sought a rights offering of approximately 400 billion won to upgrade equipment and yields at its manufacturing facility in Georgia, USA.
By late September, SKC further expanded its investment after subscribing to additional shares not taken up by Applied Materials. This increased SKC’s total stake in Absolics from 70.05% to 82.37%. SKC intends to invest approximately 590 billion won into the glass substrate business over the next three years.
