Skin disease Escalating scabies outbreaks in Brazilian schools

Health authorities in Brazil have responded to several outbreaks of skin diseases affecting school communities. In late September, investigations began in Andradas, Minas Gerais, where 11 cases of scabies were linked to a municipal daycare, and in Brodowski, São Paulo, where unspecified dermatological symptoms including red spots and fever prompted a city-wide school suspension. By the end of the month, the situation expanded to Lagoa Santa in the Belo Horizonte metropolitan region. There, a municipal school suspended classes after 20 cases of scabies were confirmed. Local officials reported difficulties in containment as some families continued to send symptomatic children to school. In response, authorities implemented sanitization protocols, including pest control and water tank cleaning, while deploying medical teams to provide rapid diagnosis and medication through the Unified Health System (SUS). As of early October, the outbreak in Lagoa Santa has intensified significantly. The municipality reported 50 new cases within a 24-hour period, bringing the total number of notifications to 241. Consequently, authorities have suspended municipal school classes through the end of the week and postponed a traditional Children’s Day festival until the Christmas period to ensure safety. While municipal schools are affected, state and private schools in the area remain operational. In neighboring Poços de Caldas, officials report no registered cases, though epidemiological surveillance is actively monitoring the situation and issuing prevention guidance, such as avoiding the sharing of personal items like towels or clothing.
