The video game franchise ‘Sleeping Dogs’ has seen recent developments regarding its historical assets and future media adaptations. Early development footage from a 2011 prototype has surfaced online. This material, which originated when the project was known as ‘Black Lotus’ and ‘True Crime: Hong Kong’, reveals significant differences from the final 2012 release, including unfinished story sequences, placeholder dialogue, and mechanics such as gang territory conquest that were ultimately altered or removed. In terms of future adaptations, actor Simu Liu has reported that a film adaptation is progressing, stating the project has ‘a REAL path forward’. Liu is set to star as the protagonist Wei Shen and serve as a producer alongside Story Kitchen. The production has secured a director, Timo Tjahjanto, and is currently in the process of negotiating rights with publisher Square Enix. This follows a previous, scrapped adaptation attempt involving Donnie Yen. Recent updates indicate that a script draft for the live-action film was reportedly completed in October 2025. The adaptation is expected to maintain the original game’s neo-noir Hong Kong setting, focusing on the conflict between law enforcement and Triad crime syndicates. The primary remaining obstacle remains the negotiation of rights with Square Enix.
