Slovak Cycling Federation Olympic qualification strategy
Overview
To protect national UCI rankings and Olympic qualification prospects, the Slovak Cycling Federation implemented an unconventional strategy for the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal. Due to injuries to elite riders Matthias Schwarzbacher and Martin Svrček, the unavailability of Nora Jenčušová, and scheduling conflicts for Lukáš Kubiš, the nation lacked eligible elite competitors.
To prevent the national championship from dropping to a lower category—which would cause a significant loss of UCI points—the federation registered amateur athletes, including Tereza Kurnická and 28-year-old Vladimír Kováčik. Kováčik, a masseur (soigneur) for the national team and former professional who had not competed at an elite level since 2017, was deployed to fulfill the UCI requirement of having at least one representative in the elite category. Coach Jakub Vančo described the measure as essential to protect the rankings of Slovakia’s cyclists ahead of the 2028 Olympic qualification period, noting the potential loss of points would be equivalent to “winning a World Tour stage race.”
Kováčik competed in the men's elite road race, successfully maintaining pace within the main group for over 100 kilometers. However, he was eventually pulled from the race by officials as the field entered more demanding final stages.
