Slovakia has taken steps to strengthen its economic and diplomatic frameworks. Initially, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO), and Eximbank coordinated to improve state support for Slovak exporters through better information sharing and joint actions. Subsequently, the Slovak government moved to resume economic and scientific-technical cooperation with Russia. Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár held talks with Russian Minister Valery Falkov to prepare for a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission for Economic and Scientific-Technical Cooperation, which has been inactive since 2021. This development follows discussions between Prime Minister Robert Fico and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The decision to restore these ties has faced significant domestic opposition. Critics have described the government’s diplomacy as failing and characterized the move as acting as a “Russian accomplice” in light of ongoing military actions in Ukraine and reported Russian cyber and intelligence activities targeting Slovakia. In August 2026, Minister Blanár confirmed that preparatory talks with Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov are intended to revive the intergovernmental commission, with a session expected in autumn 2026. Blanár described the initiative as a “pragmatic foreign policy” designed to protect national interests and energy stability, specifically regarding the supply of gas, oil, and nuclear fuel, and the management of the Druzhba pipeline. Opposition leaders from Progressive Slovakia and SaS have criticized the move as inappropriate given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, citing concerns over transparency, EU sanctions, and recent security incidents involving Russian components.
