Slovakia EU environmental funding and policy risks

Overview

Slovakia faces potential financial losses from the European Union due to environmental policy and management decisions. The Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ) warned that the country risks losing millions in EU LIFE programme funds for climate change mitigation and environmental protection because the Ministry of Environment has signed zero co-financing contracts as of May 2026.

Further complications arose regarding the zoning of four national parks: Tatra, Low Tatras, Poloniny, and Malá Fatra. Critics and environmental organizations argued that controversial zoning resolutions would leave these areas under the control of the state enterprise Lesy SR rather than national park management, potentially jeopardizing 450 million euros in funding from the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Following a memorandum of cooperation signed between the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture on August 6, the Slovak government revoked the controversial zoning resolutions. The Ministry of Environment stated this move fulfills the original objectives of the resolutions. While the Ministry had previously rejected claims that the zoning would jeopardize funding, the European Commission noted it is monitoring the situation and assessing concerns raised regarding the government’s decisions.
