Slovakia legislative and law enforcement amendments

The Slovak government has approved several legislative amendments targeting environmental protection, animal welfare, and law enforcement capabilities.

Initial measures include the introduction of new environmental and animal protection crimes. These amendments aim to penalize unethical breeders and address gross negligence in the protection of trees and shrubs. The proposal also establishes a new offense for the unauthorized handling of fluorinated greenhouse gases and modifies judicial procedures following discussions with the European Commission and the Council of Europe.

Subsequent legislative actions have expanded police powers to combat terrorism, serious crime, and domestic violence. This includes the potential integration of artificial intelligence in law enforcement operations and new authorities to demand the surrender of electronic devices and weapons. Furthermore, the National Passenger Information Centre has gained expanded capabilities to process data from various transport sectors to monitor travel histories, subject to specific security risk justifications and oversight protocols.
