Slovakia public debt and fiscal challenges
Overview
The Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ) reports that Slovakia’s gross public debt is projected to reach approximately 92 billion euros by the end of 2026, or roughly 63.7% of the GDP. This equates to a debt burden of about 16,700 euros per citizen.
Debt servicing costs have increased, with over 1.4 billion euros spent in the first half of the year, marking a 390 million euro rise compared to the previous year. Although fiscal consolidation and higher VAT collection increased public revenue by 6.8% year-on-year, economic growth has been hindered by global market uncertainty and the war in Ukraine.
In the healthcare sector, public hospitals face significant liabilities to the Social Insurance Agency exceeding 500 million euros. Minister Kamil Šaško indicated that restructured payment schedules with creditors were required to avoid sanctions from the European Commission.
