Slovakia has officially implemented significant amendments to its road traffic laws as of September 1, 2026, aimed at increasing road safety and strengthening compliance. A central feature of the update is the classification of drivers who commit three serious violations within a 12-month period as road recidivists. These individuals must undergo a mandatory rehabilitation program, including a remedial course and a professional competence examination. The Ministry of Interior stated that these changes align the requirements for experienced drivers with those already applied to new drivers, noting that repeated violations may indicate a decline in driving ability or persistent compliance issues. A fourth violation within the same period can result in the revocation of a driver's license, requiring medical and psychological evaluations to regain privileges. These penalties also apply to those riding bicycles or electric scooters. Financial sanctions for significant speeding offenses can reach up to 1,300 euros. The law expands the use of automated systems and AI technology to detect infractions such as mobile phone usage or failure to wear seatbelts.
