Slovakia social welfare and truancy legislative reforms

Slovak Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Family Erik Tomáš has announced a legislative package designed to combat truancy, fictitious foster care, and the misuse of child benefits.

To address school attendance, the proposal suggests a three-month period where child benefits are redirected to a special recipient, such as a municipality, if a child is truant. If attendance does not improve, benefits may be suspended for further three-month periods. The legislation also aims to prevent the misuse of benefits by third-country nationals whose children do not reside in Slovakia and mandates quarterly checks to ensure children in foster care are living in their designated households.

Minister Tomáš noted that these stricter measures are necessary following the expenditure of between 1.5 and 2 billion euros on Roma community projects since 2007 without significant results.
