Smart home device privacy and safety risks

Smart home and computing devices present various privacy and safety considerations. Laptops may contain openings near webcams that serve as microphone channels, potentially impacting audio privacy. Robotic vacuum cleaners pose risks through room mapping, cleaning history storage, and object recognition features. Some models utilize cameras and microphones that could record sensitive scenes or private conversations.

A specific security flaw was identified involving DJI Romo robotic vacuums, where a server-side authorization error allowed a user to gain control over approximately 7,000 devices worldwide. DJI reported that this issue, caused by improper permission checks, was addressed via updates in February 2026.

Data collected by smart appliances, including apartment maps and usage patterns, is often transmitted to manufacturer services, creating risks if user accounts lack strong security measures. Beyond digital privacy, physical safety risks have been noted with household appliances; for example, manufacturers have warned that open dishwasher doors can create tripping hazards or expose children and pets to chemicals and sharp objects.
