Smartphone-based remote cataract screening technology
Overview
Researchers have developed a low-cost smartphone attachment designed to facilitate remote cataract and eye disease screening in underserved and rural communities. The device, which includes a magnifying lens, two white LEDs, and a silicone scope, clips onto a smartphone camera to capture diagnostic-quality images. The total system cost is reported to be less than £150.
Presented at the 44th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the technology was tested in a study involving 1,093 patients in rural Tamil Nadu. The results demonstrated high diagnostic agreement with in-person examinations by ophthalmologists, specifically showing 89% agreement on general cataract diagnoses, 96% for mature cataracts, and 97% for pseudophakia.
Developed by a team including Dr. Prabhu Krishna Ravilla of Aravind Eye Hospital and researchers from Johns Hopkins University, the tool is intended to allow community health workers with minimal training to identify patients in need of surgery. This model aims to supplement or replace traditional ‘eye camps’ by decoupling specialist availability from physical presence, potentially reducing the logistical complexities and costs associated with traditional outreach clinics.
