Smartwatch technology in health monitoring

Overview

Research and clinical applications of smartwatch data are expanding from identifying biological aging markers to facilitating real-time medical monitoring.

A Harvard study published in Nature Communications found that continuous activity patterns recorded by smartwatches, such as intensity and regularity, can provide signals related to biological aging. The study noted that more intense activity rhythms were associated with a lower probability of accelerated aging.

Building on the utility of wearable data, new initiatives in Germany are integrating vital sign monitoring directly into medical records. Projects such as the KONSENS initiative and the ‘Dialograum’ project aim to connect patients—particularly seniors and heart attack patients—with healthcare providers through platforms that transmit blood pressure, pulse, and weight data. Additionally, new assessment systems are being developed to identify frailty and cardiovascular risks in older populations.
