SME economic impact in Latin America and the Caribbean
Overview
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) constitute approximately 99% of businesses and generate over 60% of formal employment across Latin America and the Caribbean. A Visa report, ‘The Multiplier Effect: Visa 2026 Small Business Banking Report’, indicates that financial relationships with these enterprises can generate returns significantly higher than consumer banking, reaching up to eight times higher in markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Chile.
While SMEs drive economic activity, they face various structural challenges. In Chile, addressing the productivity gap between SMEs and large corporations could potentially increase national GDP by 6%. Across the region, many businesses still rely on consumer banking products rather than specialized business tools, despite an increasing demand for credit, liquidity solutions, and digital transformation.
In specific contexts like Venezuela, a paradox has emerged where digital transaction infrastructure is highly developed, with 84% of the population holding bank accounts, yet formal credit remains nearly non-existent. In these environments, mobile payments are frequently used to manage inflation, and microfinance institutions play a critical role by providing resources to those excluded from traditional banking due to collateral requirements.
