São Paulo crime prevention and policing efforts

Overview

Authorities in São Paulo have implemented specialized tactics and technological integrations to combat rising crime rates, particularly theft and robbery.

In early October, the São Paulo Military Police deployed the Batalhão de Resposta Avançada Operacional (BRAvO), a specialized motorcycle unit consisting of 250 officers. Utilizing 150 motorcycles to navigate heavy traffic and narrow streets, the unit focuses on high-crime neighborhoods in the North Zone. Initial operations reported over 3,100 individual stops and 34 arrests.

By late October, security efforts expanded to address specific vehicle theft trends and highway crime. While some pickup truck thefts decreased overall, certain models like the Volkswagen Saveiro and Fiat Toro saw significant increases in criminal targeting. To counter this, the State Public Security Secretariat entered a five-year agreement with the Department of Highways (DER-SP) to integrate facial recognition and license plate reading into the ‘Muralha Paulista’ monitoring system.

Simultaneously, the Civil Police have increased operations against ‘smash-and-grab’ thefts along the Marginal Tietê, while western municipalities have intensified inspections to remove irregular or abandoned vehicles from circulation.
