In early July 2026, Brazilian authorities opened a joint Public Ministry-Civil Police probe into former São Paulo FC president Julio Casares over alleged misappropriation of roughly R$ 11 million withdrawn from club funds between 2021 and 2026. Witnesses described regular cash withdrawals in envelopes, often around R$ 100,000 per month, while an internal audit flagged approximately R$ 7 million as unaccounted for. Investigators also traced R$ 1 million in corporate-card purchases for luxury items, including high-end stores, restaurants, and beauty salons; Casares partially refunded these costs in November 2025. Casares denied the accusations on 26 July, stating, “I am not a thief,” and calling the claims “absurd.” He maintained that cash withdrawals were linked to club matches and that personal expenses of around R$ 400,000 had been reimbursed. His legal team characterized the disciplinary process as a “process of exception” that denied him access to essential documents. On 29 July 2026, Casares resigned from the club’s associate roster and its councils a day before a scheduled Ethics and Discipline Commission hearing. In August 2026, the Ethics Commission unanimously recommended his expulsion from the club's membership and suggested he must reimburse the club for funds used for personal expenses. Following an approved impeachment, the Deliberative Council was scheduled to vote on his formal expulsion. On 9 September 2026, the Deliberative Council voted with a significant majority to expel Casares from the club’s membership, citing reckless and irregular management. The vote passed approximately 223 to 5. The club is seeking reimbursement for funds proven to have been used for private purposes. Casares’ defense has labeled the decision an “abusivo desfecho” (abusive outcome), claiming the proceedings were politically motivated and that his right to defense was hindered. Parallel criminal investigations into alleged embezzlement and money laundering continue.
