Following his expulsion from São Paulo FC on 9 September 2026, former president Julio Casares has initiated legal actions to contest the decision. On 29 September, Casares filed a lawsuit against the club to overturn his removal, alleging that the expulsion was the result of a “trama política” (political plot). He continues to deny reckless management, maintaining that the undocumented funds—estimated between R$ 6.95 million and R$ 7 million—were used for cash prize payments related to club titles. His legal team also seeks to validate his corporate card reporting and demands that the club provide evidence of actual resource diversion. In response to Casares’ lawsuit, São Paulo FC has filed a legal contestation, describing his arguments as “hallucinations” and accusing him of attempting to shift responsibility onto third parties. The club’s defense maintains that Casares previously admitted to using the corporate card for personal luxury items, medical expenses, and other private costs, and noted that independent audits flagged significant financial movements lacking sufficient documentation. In parallel, the Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJSP) has issued rulings regarding the ongoing criminal investigations. On 22 September, the court rejected two motions from Casares’ defense. One request sought to allow his legal team to participate in witness testimonies alongside the Civil Police and prosecutors, while a Habeas Corpus petition challenged the eligibility of the prosecutors involved. The court ruled that the prosecutors are authorized to work with the Civil Police and stated that the defense will only be permitted to participate in the next phase of the proceedings. The club’s leadership remains under scrutiny, facing separate investigations into VIP box ticket sales and the rejection of the 2025 accounts, despite a reported R$ 56 million surplus.
