Incidents involving alleged hate crimes and physical altercations have been reported on the São Paulo metro system. In July, an English teacher was assaulted on the Line 5-Lilac platform. The victim reported being struck with punches and kicks after the assailant allegedly shouted homophobic slurs. The Metropolitan Police Station is investigating the matter as both bodily injury and homophobia. In October, a separate incident occurred at Paulista station on the Line 4-Yellow. Security agents restrained and handcuffed a passenger following a disagreement that witnesses linked to an alleged instance of racism. Police are investigating the event, which was registered as bodily injury. In October 2026, law student Márcio Ferreira was targeted with racial slurs at the Vila Sônia station on the Yellow Line. The incident occurred after Ferreira attempted to intervene in a verbal dispute between a woman and other individuals. According to reports, the woman directed racial insults at the student, including terms such as ‘Preto do caralho!’ and ‘preto de bosta.’ Video footage of the confrontation was shared on social media, showing the woman following Ferreira up an escalator and accusing him of aggression. The line operator, Motiva, confirmed that security agents attended to the disagreement. Ferreira has expressed his intention to report the case to the police.
