São Paulo social housing and shelter management
Overview
The municipal government of São Paulo has faced legal and social challenges regarding the management of social housing and shelters. In July, the city denied an operating license for Hotel Curitiba 76, a social hotel on Rua Santa Ifigênia that provides shelter for 128 vulnerable individuals.
This closure follows a previous attempt by the city in March to shut down the facility, which was stopped by an injunction from the 14th Treasury Court of the São Paulo Court of Justice. That injunction prohibited the discontinuation of services at both Hotel Curitiba and the São Leopoldo Shelter.
The municipal administration stated that the goal of demobilizing the site is to “ensure the safety and dignity of the users” due to reports of drug trafficking and criminal activity in the vicinity. However, the Public Defender's Office is currently investigating whether the recent closure order violates the standing court injunction and has requested judicial clarification from Mayor Ricardo Nunes' administration.
