In July 2026 São Paulo’s AI‑enabled traffic‑camera system moved from pilot to full enforcement, recording more than 7,000 violations in a month on the Rodoanel Mario Covas and Raposo Tavares highways. The cameras capture high‑resolution images that are sent to the Polícia Militar Rodoviária for human validation before fines are issued, and they also flag stopped vehicles, trucks in prohibited lanes and other safety hazards. The state’s vehicle‑registration framework was modernised earlier in the year with a fully digital licensing portal and the electronic CRLV‑e certificate. On 2 July a detailed licensing calendar was released, keeping the R$ 174.08 fee and allowing instant issuance of the digital certificate via the Detran‑SP portal or Poupatempo Digital app. A surge in classic‑car registrations (+56 %) pushed the historic‑vehicle fleet to 82,005 units, with a separate R$ 469.91 fee for full historic‑certificate packages. Data released on 8 July showed 526,121 traffic fines in the first half of 2026, of which only 16.5 % were paid. The most common infractions were failure to register a vehicle after transfer and operating an unlicensed vehicle, together accounting for over 43 % of fines. Seat‑belt non‑use and mobile‑phone use remained among the top violations, while red‑light offenses entered the top five. Licensing deadlines were reinforced on 20 July: owners of plates ending in 1 or 2 must clear the R$ 174.08 fee and any debts by 31 July to obtain the updated CRLV‑e; trucks with the same endings have a September deadline. On 26 July Detran‑SP announced that the July 31 deadline would be enforced automatically through a new digital system that updates vehicle status instantly once payments are confirmed. By early August the digital process was extended to self‑service kiosks and the Carteira Digital de Trânsito app, and similar online deadlines were announced for other states.
