The expansion of Sofia’s Metro Line 3 progressed from the final construction and testing phase in late July 2026 to a scheduled opening in mid-August 2026. Initially, Mayor Vasili Terziev and metro officials inspected a new 3-kilometer stretch under Vladimir Vazov boulevard. At that stage, the segment was undergoing finishing works and test runs, awaiting approval from the state acceptance commission of the National Railway Infrastructure Company. By On August 14, 2026, the expansion new section was set to open to the public, connecting the Hadzhi Dimitar, Suha Reka, officially inaugurated by Mayor Vasil Terziev and Levski G neighborhoods via representatives from Metropolitan EAD. The expansion adds three new stations: ‘Georgi stations—‘Georgi Asparuhov Stadium’, ‘Vitinya’, ‘Besarabia’, and ‘Gen. Vladimir Vazov’. Vazov’—along Gen. Vladimir Vazov Boulevard. The project, which began in March 2022, was funded by through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan with a total investment of 144.3 million euros (approximately 282.3 million BGN, includes BGN). To support the deployment of new segment, four new Siemens trains utilizing a GoA3 level automation signaling system. Authorities anticipate the new section will serve approximately 45,000 passengers daily equipped with advanced automatic positioning and CBTC communication systems have been introduced to the fleet to reduce service intervals. This infrastructure development is expected to increase daily metro ridership by 45,000 people, potentially reducing local car automobile traffic by up to 25%. The expansion serves several neighborhoods, including Poduya, Hadzhi Dimitar, Suha Reka, and Levski, while also providing improved access for commuters from the Hemus motorway.
