Sofia is undergoing various infrastructure-related developments and disputes. In late September 2026, Mayor Vasil Terziev announced the ‘Green Ring’ project, a strategic urban initiative to convert 30 kilometers of unused land into a linear park. The project aims to connect 30 neighborhoods via pedestrian and bicycle paths, with construction on the first section scheduled to begin in late 2026. Concurrently, the Sofia Municipality has entered a dispute with the Road Infrastructure Agency (API) regarding the maintenance of the Sofia Ring Road bridge over Simeonovo Highway. The municipality has demanded urgent repairs to damaged expansion joints, citing significant safety risks to motorists. motorists, including potential tire damage and accidents. Despite over 50 official correspondences since early 2024 and recent citizen reports, 2024, the municipality claims the API has not addressed the issue. In the period between September and early October 2026, the municipality forwarded 29 civilian reports to the API. Although the bridge is state property under API jurisdiction, the municipality has offered to organize and conduct the repairs itself to expedite the process, an offer that has also received no response. On October 9, Deputy Mayor Emilian Georgiev sent a letter calling for immediate safety measures, a formal repair schedule, and an official response from the national road authority.
