SOLA school relocation to Rwanda
Overview
The School of Leadership Afghanistan (SOLA), formerly the only all-girls boarding school in Afghanistan, has established a permanent campus in Kigali, Rwanda. This relocation follows the 2021 fall of Kabul and subsequent Taliban restrictions that bar girls from secondary education.
To protect the community from Taliban tracking, school head Shabana Basij-Rasikh reported that records containing student and staff identities were burned. Following mediation from Qatar, students and faculty relocated to Rwanda, initially resuming classes in a hotel before transitioning to a guarded compound. The institution, which serves several hundred students and staff, is supported by philanthropic funding, including contributions from Melinda French Gates.
