Investigations into corruption within the solar energy sector in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, have expanded from individual procurement fraud to allegations involving local political officials. In mid-October, a former mechanical engineering professor, identified by the surname Wang, was detained for allegedly accepting bribes to manipulate solar energy procurement and leasing tenders. Prosecutors alleged that Wang leaked confidential documents to specific vendors. Following an initial release on bail, Wang was reportedly caught attempting to solicit further bribes. By late October, the investigation grew to include Kaohsiung City Councilors. Councilor Chen Shan-hui was granted bail following searches of her residence and office. Prosecutors allege that Chen and fellow councilor Chen Ming-ze conspired to accept bribes from solar energy companies. The investigation suggests officials may have used their influence to pressure developers, including inciting local protests to demand fees for coordination or to mandate specific contractors for soil removal related to solar power development. On October 28, reports indicated that Councilor Chen Shan-hui was released on 2.5 million TWD bail. This case remains an extension of the investigation involving Councilor Chen Ming-ze, who is accused of using his position to extort interests from solar power operators.
