Solar energy development and waste management in Sweden

Sweden is seeing a growing focus on solar energy as part of a broader transition toward renewable resources. Initial efforts emphasize the benefits of solar farms, which are presented as versatile investments that can utilize unused land, provide passive income for landowners, and help stabilize the local electricity grid.

As interest in solar technology expands, the focus has shifted toward consumer-level installations and related home automation. Local providers are increasingly utilized for their expertise in managing regional challenges, such as snow and wind loads, as well as navigating government regulations and subsidies from the Swedish Energy Agency. Alongside solar adoption, there is rising demand for automated sun protection systems. Experts warn that these must be integrated with weather stations rather than simple scheduling; without wind sensors, awnings can act as sails during storms, potentially causing “devastating damage” to both the protection and the building facade. Zip screens are noted as a more wind-resistant, though more expensive, alternative.

Looking toward long-term sustainability, Sweden is addressing the challenge of solar energy waste. Scenario analyses from RISE suggest the country may need to manage up to 150,000 tons of decommissioned solar panels annually by 2060. To address this, the CircSolar project has developed a circular roadmap involving collaborations between Axfoundation, KTH, and several recycling and energy firms. This initiative aims to extend the life of panels through systematic quality testing and improved producer responsibility, as research from KTH indicates many decommissioned panels are still functional or capable of repair.
