In late July 2026, experts highlighted the importance of proper maintenance for photovoltaic installations and introduced a hydrometallurgical recycling process developed by New York University researchers. This method dissolves critical metals such as silver, indium, gallium, tellurium and lead in liquid solvents, offering lower energy consumption than traditional pyrometallurgy and promising improved metal recovery and reduced landfill waste.

A few days later, Slovak researchers presented a reverse‑disassembly recycling technique that dismantles panels in the opposite order of their manufacture—removing the aluminium frame, electrical box, glass, and finally the protective foil. Aimed at cutting processing costs and meeting stringent EU recycling targets, the approach seeks to increase material recovery rates for the growing waste stream of panels installed between 2008 and 2011.

Together, these developments illustrate a rapid diversification of recycling strategies, ranging from chemical recovery of high‑value metals to mechanical re‑configuration of panel components, as the solar industry confronts the challenge of managing end‑of‑life installations worldwide.
