Solid-state Advancements in solid-state battery failure mechanism research safety and analysis
Research teams have identified the physical mechanisms responsible for failures in solid-state batteries, a discovery that addresses long-standing barriers to commercial deployment. Initial findings from the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials and researchers from MIT and the Technical University of Munich revealed that lithium deposits create high internal pressure and electrical imbalances. These conditions cause lithium structures to grow and pierce the solid electrolyte or separator, leading to short circuits. Following these identifications, researchers from MIT and the Technical University of Munich announced a breakthrough in safety. By modifying the manufacturing process of ceramic materials to minimize negative electrical charges at crystal boundaries, scientists have successfully minimized the formation of needle-like lithium dendrites. This modification allows batteries to handle over 300 percent higher electrical current without the risk of short circuits or overheating, potentially enabling electric vehicles with faster charging and longer ranges. Further advancements in managing dendrites have emerged through collaborative research involving Stanford University, SLAC, and the University of Waterloo. These researchers addressed the issue by applying lateral mechanical compression to the ceramic electrolyte using a shape-memory alloy ring. This technique forces dendrite growth to occur horizontally rather than vertically toward the electrodes, preventing short circuits despite the presence of dendrites. Additionally, a team at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) improved the accuracy of battery analysis by using a cryogenic cross-section polisher to eliminate false topographical signals that previously caused visual illusions of ion movement during electrochemical strain microscopy.
