Solomon Islands political and fiscal scrutiny

Opposition Leader Manasseh Sogavare has raised concerns regarding the fiscal management and democratic engagement in the Solomon Islands.

Initially, Sogavare criticized the GREAT Coalition Government for its handling of economic and governance issues. He highlighted significant fiscal pressures and depleted cash balances, citing high-cost government appointments and consultancy fees. He urged the administration to provide greater transparency regarding policy funding, such as the proposed free education initiative for 2027, and challenged the government’s ability to meet long-term economic promises.

Subsequently, marking the International Day of Democracy, Sogavare shifted focus toward civic responsibility. He argued that democracy requires continuous engagement between election cycles, emphasizing that citizens must remain well-informed and capable of questioning government decisions. He advocated for a democratic model that incorporates the Solomon Islands’ traditional community values and stressed that the role of the Opposition is to provide necessary scrutiny of the government.
