Somali government sanctions and regional tensions
Overview
The Somali government has taken steps to sanction individuals suspected of links to the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group Al-Shabaab. The National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism imposed financial sanctions and asset freezes on ten people, including former South West State president Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen and former Somali Custodial Corps commander Mahad Abdirahman Adan.
Following these sanctions, Somali Parliament Speaker Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur accused Kenya of harboring terrorists, specifically questioning why individuals identified as Al-Shabaab members, including Laftagareen, are permitted to live openly in Kenya. The Speaker’s comments came after forces loyal to Laftagareen retook several districts in the Bay region. Nur also criticized Ethiopian troops for failing to defend certain towns and questioned the effectiveness of the African Union peacekeeping mission in preventing Al-Shabaab from re-establishing a presence in secured areas.
