In Mogadishu, Somali lawmakers elected Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur (Jaamac) as the new Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament. Nur received secured 142 votes, votes out of 171 lawmakers, defeating Abdulkadir Omar Moallin (Daada), who received 30 votes. Nur is a former member of the House and former has held several high-level positions, including Minister of Ports and Marine Transport. Transport, Minister of Defense, and Minister of Justice. His background also includes diplomatic service at the Somali Embassy in Ankara and work with the Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated Nur, noting the House of the People’s critical role in legislation, government accountability, and the state-building process. In response, Nur expressed his intention to utilize his diplomatic experience to elevate the Somali Parliament to “international standards.” Concurrently, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met with former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo to discuss the national political crisis and upcoming election talks. The Federal Government and opposition groups are preparing to negotiate the next national election framework. While disputes have existed regarding the implementation of a ‘one-person, one-vote’ system, there is optimism that a compromise may be reached via a joint or representative electoral commission.
