Somali piracy of Tanzanian tanker Asana
Overview
Mid‑July 2026 the Tanzanian‑flagged tanker Asana was boarded by suspected Somali pirates about 65 nautical miles south of Al Mukalla, Yemen. The vessel issued a distress call at 06:20 GMT on 17 July and drifted southeast at roughly 2 knots. UKMTO described the event as an “illegal boarding”; the Yemeni coastguard confirmed a pirate seizure. A South Korean warship was dispatched, while British, Yemeni and EU (Atalanta) authorities monitored the case.
The ship, carrying a 19‑member crew (11 Indians, 5 Syrians, 2 Yemenis, 1 Egyptian), was moved into Puntland waters, first off Caluula in Bari province and later toward the ports of Eyl and Garacad. By 27 July the pirates were reported holding the crew near the coastal village of Jifle; later reports indicated the vessel was being steered further south. No armed security team was aboard and the owners had not commented.
The hijacking is part of a broader resurgence of Somali piracy in the Gulf of Aden and western Indian Ocean, with the French navy noting 18 attacks since April 2024 and historical ransom peaks of $150 million. The incident raises concerns for the key shipping corridor that carries 12‑15 % of global trade value.
