Somalia food security and climate resilience efforts

Overview

Somalia is navigating a severe humanitarian crisis characterized by high malnutrition rates and food insecurity affecting approximately six million people. The country faces significant climate risks, including the threat of severe flooding following consecutive drought seasons.

In response to these vulnerabilities, international financial support has been mobilized. The African Development Bank pledged approximately $19 million through the Africa Disaster Risk Financing Program to strengthen disaster preparedness and response.

Furthering efforts to stabilize the rural economy, Somalia and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) launched the $31.22 million Rural Livelihoods Resilience Programme. This initiative aims to bolster agricultural production and food security for over 125,000 rural households, building on increased cooperation following the resolution of Somalia’s outstanding arrears.
