Somalia-Pakistan defense cooperation
Overview
Somalia and Pakistan have entered discussions to strengthen defense cooperation, specifically focusing on the development and modernization of the Somali Air Force. In late September 2026, Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met with a Pakistani delegation in Mogadishu to discuss expanding military training, personnel skills, and air defense capabilities to support operations against Al-Shabaab.
Following these high-level engagements, reports emerged in October 2026 suggesting that Somalia has reached an agreement to acquire Pakistani JF-17 Thunder fighter jets. While the Somali and Pakistani governments have not officially confirmed the specific procurement details, such as the total cost or delivery schedule, the reported deal follows a memorandum of understanding signed in August regarding defense and security cooperation. During previous diplomatic visits, Pakistani officials presented a model of the JF-17 to the Somali Air Force commander, signaling the deepening of military ties between Mogadishu and Islamabad.
