In late July 2026, Puntland’s regional administration accused neighboring Galmudug of permitting federal militia movements through its airports and territory, citing recent clashes near Bosaso where Puntland seized vehicles and captured fighters. The warning highlighted a growing military presence in the divided central town of Galkayo and cautioned that further buildup could lead to open confrontation. Two days later, Puntland‑aligned forces warned that an armed clash in Galkayo was looming, blaming President Said Abdullahi Deni for escalating political and security tensions. Former senior officials echoed these concerns, warning that a clash could divert resources from the fight against Al‑Shabaab and ISIS, spark a humanitarian crisis, and urged restraint and political dialogue. On 5 August 2026, Puntland security forces launched a planned operation and seized a Somali federal government camp near Galkayo’s airport. The assault led to the arrest of more than 100 people and the capture of weapons, ammunition, vehicles, police uniforms and other equipment. Residents reported mortar rounds landing in residential areas and fighting that lasted over an hour, though casualty figures were not disclosed. President Said Abdullahi Deni said the operation was intended to send a clear message to anyone working against Puntland and to counter what he described as federal attempts to undermine Puntland’s security. The seizure marks the first direct capture of a federal position in the contested city, raising the risk of further armed confrontation and complicating efforts to focus on the fight against Al‑Shabaab and ISIS. On 15 August 2026, tensions escalated further during a visit to Galmudug by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. While the President traveled to Dhuusamareeb and Xananbuur, his planned visit to Galkayo sparked a security dispute.
