Sony PlayStation handheld device certifications

Overview

Sony Interactive Entertainment has registered two new gaming devices with the Wi-Fi Alliance, identified by model numbers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105. These filings have led to speculation that Sony is developing a hardware revision or successor to the PlayStation Portal.

The model numbering, which uses the ‘Y’ prefix associated with the current CFI-Y1000 series, suggests a direct evolution of the existing handheld. The certified devices are categorized as ‘Gaming Console/Peripherals’ and run on Android 15. Technical specifications indicate support for dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), a 3.5 mm audio jack, and a USB charging port. Notably, the filings indicate a lack of support for Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7.

While the certifications do not explicitly confirm specific display upgrades, the developments have intensified rumors regarding a potential OLED version of the device to provide better contrast and deeper black levels than the current LCD model. Analysts suggest Sony may be preparing two distinct versions—potentially an LCD base model and an upgraded OLED version—to compete with similar handheld offerings such as the Steam Deck.
