Sony has released system software updates for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles. For the PlayStation 5 Pro, the ‘Enhance PSSR Image Quality’ setting is now enabled by default, utilizing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution to provide sharper visuals. The PlayStation 5 updates introduce several user interface and social features, including a new Community Activity widget in the Welcome Hub that displays ‘Trending Now’ multiplayer modes and regional ‘Top 10’ lists. Users can also now enable a ‘Display Names’ feature in voice chats with customizable speaker indicators. To assist with eSports tournament management, certain regions will see modified Bluetooth settings where disabling Bluetooth prevents the console from entering rest mode and disables HDMI Device Link functionality. While the PlayStation 5 update focuses on new features and social elements, the PlayStation 4 version 14.00 update focuses primarily on improving system performance and stability. Expanding on its upscaling capabilities, Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-powered technology designed for the standard PlayStation 5. Developed through ‘Project Amethyst’—a collaboration between Sony and AMD—QSSR aims to bring visual benefits similar to the PSSR found on the PS5 Pro to the base model. Because the standard console lacks dedicated machine-learning hardware, QSSR utilizes a streamlined neural network architecture to enhance image detail and temporal stability, though technical analyses suggest it is best suited for upscaling to 1440p. The technology is being rolled out via software updates for ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ and ‘Ghost of Yōtei’, with Sony stating it will be made broadly available to all PlayStation developers.
