Coco Gauff’s US Open campaign ended in the semifinals with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Elena Rybakina. The defeat prevented Gauff from pursuing the world No. 1 ranking later this season. Throughout the tournament, Gauff struggled with double faults, recording 34 during the event; this contributes to a season total of 295, potentially marking her third consecutive year leading the WTA in that category. Following her exit, Gauff addressed social media impersonation involving a fake account, @CocoGauff448, which she described as “mad weird.” Since the US Open, Gauff has focused on returning to “match mode” at the China Open in Beijing. After advancing to the third round, she secured a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Sun Xinran. However, the match sparked controversy when Gauff requested a video review, claiming flickering LED advertising boards were distracting her. Gauff faced a wave of racist and sexist abuse on social media following the decision, with critics accusing her of cheating. Gauff defended herself on X, stating, “I’m not a cheater or a thief,” and described the volume of comments as “insane.” While the WTA expressed being “appalled by the racial abuse,” some fans criticized the organization for a delayed response. The United Nations Human Rights Office, led by High Commissioner Volker Türk, condemned the attacks, noting that Black female athletes are specifically targeted for such vitriol. Former world number one Andy Roddick also defended Gauff, calling the online comments “disgusting.” Gauff, who described the experience as “draining,” has since withdrawn from the Wuhan Open.
