South Africa agriculture export challenges

In July 2026 South Africa’s farm sector was already feeling pressure from higher fertilizer and fuel costs tied to the Iran‑United States conflict, logistics bottlenecks and a looming El Niño‑related drought. These factors threatened the profitability of grain, fruit and meat shipments that account for roughly 8 % of the country’s agricultural trade, especially to the Middle East.

At the same time, regional partners began to push back. By the end of the month Botswana and Mozambique announced plans to curb imports of South African vegetables and fruit, citing food‑security and import‑substitution goals. Officials in both countries warned that the curbs run contrary to the Southern African Customs Union and the African Continental Free Trade Area, which promote open regional trade. Analysts cautioned that the new restrictions could disrupt supply chains, raise prices and undermine South Africa’s strategy of expanding agricultural exports.

The situation therefore shifted from a focus on input‑cost pressures and the need for technology transfer to an acute trade dispute with neighboring states that could limit market access for South African producers.
