Overview

In late July 2026 South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs accelerated its digital identity programme. On 22 July, the department added Absa as a fourth banking partner, deploying mobile bank branches on Iveco trucks to serve remote and peri‑urban areas. These units, equipped with secure cubicles for Smart ID applications, more than doubled the number of locations where citizens could apply for a Smart ID, raising service points from 214 to 541 and targeting around 750 bank branches and 1,000 locations by year‑end.

A week later, Home Affairs announced a roadmap to phase out the traditional green barcoded ID book. The decision follows a 250 % rise in Smart ID uptake over 19 weeks, with over 422 000 digital IDs issued through the bank partnership. The agency plans to expand participating bank branches to over 750 by the end of 2026, add passport services and home delivery of ID documents, and pilot an Electronic Travel Authorisation system to replace paper visas. The retirement of the paper ID books is presented as a measure to curb fraud, identity theft and illegal immigration, positioning the department as a fully digital‑first agency.
