South African citrus export market dynamics

The South African citrus industry has faced evolving logistical and economic challenges. Initially, the Citrus Growers Association (CGA) maintained a steady lemon export forecast of 49.4 million cartons, aided by a wet season that improved fruit size and early harvest yields in the Eastern Cape. However, export logistics were already being pressured by conflict in the Middle East, which increased transshipment costs through Turkey and limited shipments to Iraq. By August, the overall citrus export forecast was revised downward from approximately 209.5 million to 205 million 15kg cartons. While lemon projections actually increased to 51.3 million cartons due to favorable growing conditions, other varieties such as mandarins and grapefruits saw decreases. The industry continues to navigate pressures from unfavorable weather, exchange rate fluctuations, new United States tariffs, and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have forced longer, more costly shipping routes. By late August, the total export estimate was further reduced to 197.9 million boxes, down from the 209.4 million projected in April. Specific declines were noted for Valencia oranges (58 million boxes) and Navel oranges (24.3 million boxes). Boitshoko Ntshabele, CEO of the CGA, stated that “nearly all risk factors have materialized negatively this year.” In addition to geopolitical disruptions in the Middle East—which affect markets receiving roughly 20% of exports—producers are struggling with port congestion, container shortages, and market saturation. Climatic issues, including heavy rains and severe flooding in the Western and Eastern Cape, have destroyed orchards and impacted fruit quality. The grapefruit market is specifically facing low prices due to declining consumption and surplus supply.
